NHS nursing staff have faced almost unimaginable challenges during the pandemic, and many studies have reported increased rates of depression, anxiety and severe stress, alongside a range of other serious issues.
Following on from the impact of the pandemic on the short and long-term health and wellbeing of all staff, there are continued pressures that many of our nursing colleagues are experiencing in the delivery of care. Female nurses are at higher risk of self-harm and their risk of suicide is higher than that of the general population. Moral distress is also frequently reported by nurses working in NHS today, this is the distress resulting from violation of one’s moral code.  We must also acknowledge the financial pressures nurses are facing, with the cost of living continuing to rise, as well as the impact our physical wellbeing can have on a nurse's ability to fulfil their role.
We continue to see very high levels of mental ill health amongst our NHS nurses across all ages, especially the younger age groups and the older cohort who are working for longer and may also have additional physical health needs.
The NHS needs healthy, motivated nurses to provide high-quality patient care, and we need to be able to retain those staff.
In SABP we are doing important work to address some of these issues impacting the physical and mental health needs of our nurses. We would like to share some of the work with you at this workshop. Please do join us & we look forward to seeing you!
